Former Los Angeles Dodgers player Al Ferrara, left, volunteered with Jorge Fuentes of Playworks and Oliver Soria of
UnitedHealthcare at Allesandro Elementary School on Monday, Sept. 25. In addition to activities with students, volunteers from
UnitedHealthcare worked with the LA Conservation Corps to complete a new walking path at the school (Photo: Jamie Rector).
Volunteers worked with the LA Conservation Corps to put the finishing touches on the school’s new walking path, which includes
signage, painted images and motivational phrases. The new path gives students the opportunity to be active and work toward the goal
of joining Allesandro’s “100 Mile Club,” where students attempt to walk 100 miles during the school year.
Joining the volunteer effort were nominees from “The Purpose Awards @ The Streamys,” an event to honor online, social and
digital creators, brands and nonprofits that make a difference in their communities. Representatives from Playworks played four
square, catch and dodgeball with the students.
“We thank the Dodgers, LA Conservation Corps and Playworks for joining us in making this walking path a reality for Allesandro
Elementary students,” said Robert C. Falkenberg, CEO, UnitedHealthcare of California. “By improving play places at schools
throughout our communities we can empower children to participate in healthy activities and enhance their well-being.”
“The Los Angeles Dodgers and UnitedHealthcare are grateful for the opportunity to serve the communities of Los Angeles. Since
2013, our efforts have helped promote health and wellness and give children a clean, safe place to play at their schools,” said
Naomi Rodriguez, vice president, external affairs and community relations, Los Angeles Dodgers.
This project is the latest in UnitedHealthcare’s “Do Good. Live Well.” program, an employee-volunteer initiative to help prevent
obesity. For more information about the benefits of volunteering and to find local opportunities to get involved, visit DoGoodLiveWell.org. Follow @DoGoodLiveWell on Twitter or "like" Do Good. Live Well.” on Facebook.
