John Hancock #GivingTuesday Effort Sets Single-Day Boston Marathon Fundraising Record

Boston Marathon Runners Raise $1,232,763 in 24 Hours

BOSTON, Nov. 30, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- John Hancock's third annual #GivingTuesday campaign set a new single-day Boston Marathon fundraising record. On #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, $1,232,763 was raised through 9,674 donations, surpassing last year's total of $934,285 through 7,719 donations. 

The 2017 figures represent a 32 percent increase in the total raised and a 25 percent increase in the number of donations made.  One hundred fifty-two non-profit organizations, all either John Hancock Non-Profit Partners or Official Boston Athletic Association (BAA) Charity Partners, received donations.  All donations were captured on CrowdRise, the online platform used for Boston Marathon fundraising.

For its part, John Hancock will donate $2,620 to Michele Scavongelli for being the top Boston Marathon non-profit fundraiser on CrowdRise on #GivingTuesday.  She raised $26,465 for the Youth Advocacy Foundation.

In addition, John Hancock will donate $1,000 to the fundraising efforts of those who placed second through tenth in their fundraising efforts on #GivingTuesday:

  • Lukas Gaffney, who raised $18,524 for the Boston Medical Center
  • Walter Jominy, who raised $13,425 for the ALS Association Massachusetts Chapter
  • Tracy Cockerham, who raised $12,575 for IMPACT Melanoma
  • Matt Rena, who raised $12,150 for the South Shore Health System, Inc.
  • Ramon Eluchans, who raised $12,000 for the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation
  • Chris Menard, who raised $11,000 for the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation
  • Dawne Sweeney, who raised $10,000 for the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation
  • Herbert Huene, who raised $10,000 for the Animal Rescue League of Boston
  • Bridget McLaughlin, who raised $9,446 for the McCourt Foundation

Finally, John Hancock pledged to make $500 donations to four individuals who raised at least $1,000 on CrowdRise on #GivingTuesday. Stephanie Kalb, running for the Alzheimer's Association; Sean McQuillan, running for the UMass Memorial Foundation, Inc.; Paul O'Connell running for Title IX Girls Running Club, Inc. and Belle Walker, running for Massachusetts General Hospital.
