May Wu Yee Mei recognised at ceremony in Las Vegas for
dedication to community work
MACAO, May 7, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Las Vegas Sands Corp. (NYSE:
LVS
) has named May Wu Yee Mei the winner of The Mr. Sheldon G. and Dr. Miriam Adelson Citizenship
Award presented by Sands Cares. Wu is a team member at The Venetian® Macao, and
has been working for the company for 10 years.
LVS's global citizenship award was established and inaugurated last year through Sands Cares, the company's corporate giving
programme, to recognise team members across all regions who have demonstrated a dedication to giving back to their local
communities and important causes. The award was created to honour the Adelson family's long-term commitment to philanthropy and
the legacy of giving that they have instilled in the company.
From a total of 88 nominations worldwide, 12 finalists were selected and named Sands Cares Heroes of the Year during the first
quarter of 2018. They were chosen by executives in their respective regions – Las Vegas;
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; Singapore; and Macao – based on their volunteer work with Sands Cares and with outside organisations. All finalists were
invited to Las Vegas to attend a ceremony at The Venetian on the evening of April 25 to accept their Sands Cares Heroes Awards in person.
"Over the years I've been told by so many team members that the reason they like working for our company is because it feels
like a family," said Sheldon G. Adelson, chairman and CEO of Las Vegas Sands Corp. "And just like
many families ours is guided by a set of shared values: pride, passion, integrity, dedication and excellence. As you reflect on
the evening I hope you are left with the same conclusion I have reached. This family is strong, the commitment to our values is
secure, and our future is very bright."
Dr. Wilfred Wong, president of Sands China Ltd., said: "Sands China is very proud of Ms. Wu for
having achieved this honour. She and her fellow Sands Cares Heroes – and all the volunteers in the Sands Cares programme –
represent some of the best qualities of the human spirit: compassion, caring, and the willingness to devote one's time and energy
to the service of others. They inspire all of us at Sands China to strive to internalise these same qualities to make a positive
impact in our community and in our workplace."
An active volunteer for the last eight years, Wu has been involved in various volunteer efforts with both Sands China and with
outside organisations. Early on in her volunteering work, she received the unexpected news of her grandfather's passing during a
volunteer event. She says the news had a huge impact on her life, and made her want to spend more time with the elderly in
general, which is evident in her volunteer work. Wu's dedication to volunteering has been a source of inspiration to her
colleagues, many of whom have joined the Sands Cares Ambassador programme as a result. In 2015, she was the recipient of the
Excellent Volunteer for Community Service Award by the Association of Volunteer Social Service Macao.
Some of the organisations Wu has recently supported include the Peng On Tung Tele-Assistance programme, Macao Holy House of
Mercy, Macau Special Olympics, the General Union of Residents' Associations of Macao, the Macau
Youth Volunteer Association, and Clean the World, among others.
Wu said: "I am so grateful to have been able to come to Las Vegas to attend the Adelson
Citizenship Award Ceremony. It was very surprising and humbling to have been chosen as the winner this year, and I consider
myself very lucky to have received this honour. I hope more team members will be inspired to join the Sands Cares Ambassador
programme in the future so that more people in need can benefit from their service."
"Sands Cares is very important to me and my fellow team members because it allows us to give back to our community, as well as
to get up close and personal with those in need," she added. "Through volunteer work in our communities, we are making this world
a better place to live in. What we are doing right now is for the future and for the next generation. Volunteering makes me feel
that I'm making a useful contribution by giving back to the community."
Joining Wu on her trip to the ceremony in Las Vegas were fellow finalists Amy Wong, a team member at Sands® Macao, and Lourdes Cabalida, who
works at The Venetian Macao.
The 12 finalists and Sands Cares Heroes are:
Bethlehem: Sergio Duarte, Donato
Mercuri, and Dorothea Portera
Las Vegas: Dana Beatty, Rachel
Conner, and Wesley Garcia
Macao: Amy Wong Se Ngan, Lourdes Mia De La Cruz Cabalida, and
May Wu Yee Mei
