Liberty Global Launches Gigabit Speeds in Poland
Warsaw is Liberty Global’s second Gigacity, following the launch of Gigabit services in Bochum, Germany
Liberty Global, the world’s largest international TV and broadband company, has launched a new Gigabit broadband speed service
in Warsaw for the benefit of its UPC Poland customers. Warsaw is the second European city to launch this innovative service,
following a similar roll-out in Bochum, Germany, in May.
The new Gigabit broadband speed service is made possible by the introduction of Liberty Global’s innovative ‘Gigabit Connect
Box’, which was developed in-house by the company’s Technology & Innovation team. In addition, the state-of-the-art network was
upgraded to the new technology of DOCSIS 3.1, allowing for a much bigger data capacity, without the need for major capital
investment.
The new broadband internet Gigabit service is also accompanied by “Smart WiFi” software, which resides inside the ‘Gigabit
Connect Box’. It facilitates the use of more than 10 WiFi antennae in an adaptive way to intelligently manage the connection
between Liberty Global’s ultrafast fibre-based network and each of the many connected devices in customers’ homes: smart TVs,
laptops, tablets, smartphones, gaming devices and so on. The result is a market-leading connectivity and entertainment experience -
whether customers are watching sports, streaming music, playing multiplayer online games or shopping online.
Liberty Global’s Chief Technology Officer, Enrique Rodriguez, said: “The launch of ground-breaking Gigabit speeds in Poland is a
tangible example of Liberty Global’s commitment to delivering transformational products and experiences to customers across our
international footprint. It follows a multi-million Euro investment in the deployment of DOCSIS 3.1 technology, which was managed
by our centralised Technology & Innovation team. We’re proud to be bringing Gigabit speeds to Poland and look forward to
introducing these services to other Liberty Global markets in due course.
The creation of Gigacities throughout Europe will transform societies and boost economic growth by enabling consumers and
businesses to do things they could previously only have dreamed of. These include providing the bandwidth and capacity needed to
develop Smart Cities – where there could be billions or even trillions of devices transmitting data that can be used to improve
transport, lighting and cleaning – to futuristic applications such as remote keyhole surgery and holographic telepresence.
The new “Gigabit Connect Box” builds on the success of Liberty Global’s original “Connect Box”, which surpassed 10 million
distributed units in July this year.
