PHOENIX, AZ / ACCESSWIRE / November 14, 2018 / Pressure BioSciences Inc. (OTCQB: PBIO) (the "Company") is a leader in the development and sale of broadly enabling,
pressure-based instruments, consumables, and platform technology solutions to the worldwide life sciences industry. The Company's
President and CEO, Richard T. Schumacher, joined Stock Day's Everett Jolly to discuss a new addition to the PBI Team, their
proprietary Ultra Shear Technology ("UST") platform, and their potential game-changing entre into the CBD Oil market.
As the interview began, Mr. Jolly asked Mr. Schumacher about the announcement of Dr. Brad Young joining the company as Senior
Vice President and Chief Commercial Operator. Mr. Schumacher explained that Dr. Young is a very accomplished scientist and
businessman. He said Dr. Young earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and an MBA from UC
Berkeley.
Mr. Schumacher commented: "He is quite a fellow. I've known him personally for 6 years, and our Chairmen Jeff has known him for
twice that time. We've talked with him in social and professional settings a lot over the years, and when he mentioned that he had
decided to move back to the east coast from San Francisco earlier this year, Jeff and I both said "here's an opportunity. He
combines the acumen, skills, and experience of a guy who has had both an entrepreneurial as well as a big company past."
Mr. Schumacher continued: "He's running the PBI commercial program, including business development. He will be working with many
of the companies that we believe should be and could be offering our sample preparation instrumentation in a package along with
their own analytical instrumentation. We think this type of collaboration will let one plus one equal three. Our instruments are
used to break apart samples to get them ready to be tested, while the other companies have the analytical equipment that will be
used to test the samples. It makes sense to put our instruments together with theirs."
Mr. Jolly then stated that the company had recently announced it had achieved a milestone in their Ultra Shear Technology
Program. He asked Mr. Schumacher for an explanation of UST and asked about PBI's planned market penetration. Mr. Schumacher
explained that PBIO's Ultra Shear Technology is one of their three patented technology platforms. The others are Pressure Cycling
Technology ("PCT") and the PreEMT platform they recently purchased from BaroFold Corporation. Mr. Schumacher stated that PBI has
over 300 PCT instruments in the field worldwide, mainly for biomarker discovery and biopharma drug development and QC. He also
stated that the PreEMT technology platform is used to impact and improve the quality of protein therapeutics, primarily through
high-pressure protein refolding.
Mr. Schumacher commented: "We use high pressure to solve problems. There are a number of applications in many exciting
industries, like the food industry, where high pressure is now being used to solve problems and to make products better. A number
of food items that we eat are put under intense pressure to kill bacteria that cause disease. By using pressure, the manufacturer
does not need to add chemicals to kill or reduce the amount of disease-causing bacteria. As mentioned, we have two technology
platforms based on high pressure. PBI's brilliant engineers and scientists were innovative enough to combine ultra-high pressure
with shearing. Shearing is cutting. The combination of ultra high pressure and shearing, with just a quick controlled burst of
heat, became our newest technology platform, Ultra Shear Technology".
Mr. Schumacher continued: "We believe that UST will be incredibly important in markets that can use nanoemulsions. As we know,
oil and water do not generally mix. However, if you break oil drops down to tiny, sub-microscopic, nano droplets then the oil will
actually dissolve in water. So that is what UST does and does well – it shears oil into nano droplets to make long-term stable
nanoemulsions. We believe that UST can be enormously valuable in the markets like cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, paints, and
nutraceuticals.
Mr. Jolly then asked if Pressure BioSciences Inc. had started to reach out to various cannabis technology companies, like those
in the CBD area. He asked if CBD was a new market that could use PBI's UST platform, or if PBI was actually looking to get into the
CBD business. Mr. Schumacher clearly stated that PBI was first and foremost an instrument company. He said their existing PCT
instruments, although primarily used by researchers in the life sciences area, are also used for applications in food, cosmetics,
and other fields. He added that future UST instruments will most likely also be used for many different applications in a variety
of fields, including the CBD industry.
Mr. Schumacher commented: "CBD comes out of the Cannabis plant in an oil. When you ingest CBD plant oil it doesn't get absorbed
very well. In fact, most people in the industry believe that less than 10 percent of the CBD in that CBD Oil is actually absorbed
into your body. So, you are losing a lot of the beneficial aspects of the CBD. What a lot of CBD companies are looking to do now,
and what some companies have tried, is to make the CBD Oil water soluble. But how do you make an oil go into water? Well we believe
we can do just that. That's what we hope to show now that we have a working prototype of the Ultra Shear instrument."
Mr. Schumacher continued: "So are we a cannabis company, no. Are we a tools company making instruments for many applications and
fields, absolutely. And are we going to be able to sell the future UST system into the cannabis field, we think so."
Mr. Schumacher mentioned that PBIO has been in contact with about a dozen CBD companies that have reached out to them to discuss
the potential of water soluble CBD Oil. He said that CBD companies want to be more cost effective as a manufacturer, which means
they don't want to have too little or too much CBD Oil in their products. On the other hand, the consumer wants to ingest the right
amount of CBD for the benefit they hope the get. Mr. Schumacher said that PBI might have the answer, as they believe that CBD Oil
can be made water soluble with UST processing. This would allow manufacturers the ability to better determine the amount of CBD Oil
needed for ingestion, which means their products could become more cost-effective. Mr. Jolly then remarked that UST might just be a
future game-changer for the CBD industry.
Mr. Schumacher responded: "So, is UST a game changer? I think any company that comes up with a good method to make truly water
soluble CBD Oil may have a game-changer."
Mr. Schumacher also said: "There are certainly ways to make CBD Oil so-called water soluble, so you have to be careful. Some are
bad in that the manufacturer might use an over-abundance of emulsifiers and surfactants, or processing methods that are not the
best. But there are also good ways. We believe that Ultra Shear Technology is a good way. We use science, we use physics, we use
pressure. We don't have to add a lot of chemicals, we don't have to do a lot of things others might do. We believe that by using
pressure and shearing through our patented valve, we can achieve what we understand the CBD market is really looking for, a good,
solid, safe way to make water soluble CBD plant oil."
Mr. Jolly then ended the interview by saying he wished Mr. Schumacher and PBIO continued success.
