Today in the markets

U.S. stocks declined Friday, giving up early gains as cheer over better-than-expected employment data gave way to nervousness ahead of the U.S. Presidential election next week.

Canada’s main index lost ground, led by falling gold stocks as a strong U.S. job creation report for October depressed gold prices.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index fell 119.35 points to 12,380.41, while the TSX Venture Exchange eased 11.26 points to close at 1,310.03.

Active stocks included equipment maker Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT, Stock Forum) and oil giant Chevron Corp. (NYSE: CVX, Stock Forum), the top losers on the Dow. Chevron fell 2.7% to $108.37, while, Caterpillar dropped 2.1% to $85.97.

In Canada, shares of Inmet Mining Corp. (TSX: T.IMN, Stock Forum) rose 6.8% to $56.17 after the company reported that third quarter income grew 19% to $116.2 million as copper production and prices improved.

SNC Lavalin Group Inc. (TSX: T.SNC, Stock Forum) rose 1.9% to $42.17 after the construction and engineering company posted better-than-expected third quarter earnings.
