Today in the markets

U.S. stocks ended flat on Thursday, giving up modest gains late in the session, denying the Dow a chance to inch closer to all-time highs.

Canadian stocks closed higher as investors reacted to a string of positive earnings reports from Canada’s big banks and generally lower commodities.

The S&P/TSX Composite climbed 89.44 points to 12,821.83, while the TSX Venture Exchange was down 2.24 points to close at 1,133.36.

Active stocks included Groupon Inc. (NASDAQ: GRPN, Stock Forum), which said Thursday it has replaced its Chief Executive Andrew Mason. The stock was down 24% to $4.53.

JC Penny Co Inc. (NYSE: JCP, Stock Forum) fell 17% to $17.57 after the department store operator reported a steep drop in sales.

In Canada, Trevali Mining Corp. (TSX: T.TV, Stock Forum) rose 6.3% to $1.01. The company said Thursday that 50% of the funding associated with a previously announced $60 million senior debt and prepaid precious metals facility has been approved in principle by RMB Resources, the resource financing division of FirstRand Group of South Africa.
