Stockhouse @ the Bell: Stocks up on job stats, Dow hits record

U.S. stocks extended their advance Friday, with the Dow Jones hitting yet another record and the S&P climbing for the sixth day in succession.

Canadian stocks closed higher after Statistics Canada said the economy created 50,700 jobs in February. That was way ahead of the approximately 8,000 jobs that economists had expected.

The S&P/TSX Composite rose 9.09 points to 12,835.61, while the TSX Venture Exchange was up 1.62 points to close at 1,117.85.

Active stocks included online music streaming firm Pandora Media (NYSE: P, Stock Forum), which reported better-than-expected quarterly sales and announced that its CEO will be stepping down. Pandora's shares soared 17.6% to $13.79.

In Canada, the base metals sector gained while May copper was down two cents at $3.50 U.S. a pound. First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (TSX: T.FM, Stock Forum) ran up 6.2% to $20.42.

The tech sector was lower as shares of MacDonald, Dettwiler and Assoc. (TSX: T.MDA, Stock Forum) fell 4.22% to $69.60 after announcing a deal to raise $250 million in an offering of shares.
