Stockhouse @ the Bell: Stocks fall on China data jitters

Today in the markets

U.S. stocks were lower Thursday, but bounced back from troughs seen earlier in the day as investors reacted to an unexpected manufacturing contraction in China.

Canadian stocks also finished in negative terrain as investors reacted to the China contraction.

The S&P/TSX Composite was down 94.41 points to 12,658.09, while the TSX Venture Exchange was off 0.03 points to close at 942.05.

Active stocks included Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ, Stock Forum) which rose 17% to $24.86 after the company posted better-than-expected profits, late Wednesday.

Pandora Media Inc. (NYSE: P,Stock Forum) rose 4% to $17.16 ahead of the online radio company’s quarterly results after the market close.

Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX, Stock Forum), which is set to premiere the fourth season of “Arrested Development” on Sunday, was down 1% to $226.18.

In Canada, Belo Sun Mining Corp. (TSX: T.BSX, Stock Forum) climbed 5.8% to 55 cents after the mineral exploration company received positive results from preliminary metallurgical leach test work conducted with samples from the South Block deposit of its 100% owned Volta Grande gold project located in Para State, Brazil.
