Marine technology company Kraken Robotics (PNG) has successfully completed the third offshore campaign of its OceanVision project.
The OceanVision project is a pilot initiative, designed to advance subsea technology and Robotics-as-a-Service (RaaS) capabilities. The company’s latest offshore data acquisition and technology demonstration campaign took place from September 21, to October 18.
During the campaign, Kraken Robotics deployed its new SeaScout system, which consists of the KATFISH towed synthetic aperture sonar, the Tentacle winch, and Autonomous Launch and Recovery System (ALARS). These technologies were deployed in order to conduct high-definition seabed imaging and mapping in Atlantic Canada.
Kraken Robotics was able to collect useful data on marine habitats, iceberg scours, and other areas of interest. In addition to collecting data, the campaign was also the first successful offshore demonstration of the company’s SeaVision laser profiler.
Kraken Robotics’ President and CEO, Karl Kenny, was pleased to see the successful completion of another OceanVision campaign.
“The KATFISH system continues to produce excellent results and outstanding images. I was especially pleased to see the successful real-world testing of our ALARS system.
“Sea conditions in October in the North Atlantic Ocean are far from ideal, and the combination of the ALARS and the Tentacle Winch allowed our team to safely and efficiently launch and recover the KATFISH, minimising risk to personnel and to equipment, and significantly increasing our operational envelope,” he said.
Karl went on to say that the company is looking forward to future campaigns of the OceanVision project in 2021. These future campaigns are likely to see further integrations of new technologies into the company’s current solutions.
