Chart and Ballard (BLDP) have successfully tested a fuel cell powered by liquid hydrogen.
The companies are collaborating under a heavy-duty hydrogen fuel system joint development MOU.
They paired a Ballard FCmove fuel cell with a Chart hydrogen vehicle fuel system at Chart’s test facility in Minnesota.
The demonstration confirms that heavy-duty vehicles powered by Ballard fuel cells can use Chart liquid hydrogen vehicle fuel systems.
Liquid hydrogen has space, weight and range advantages compared with gaseous hydrogen, allowing for up to double the range, as well as simplified fueling infrastructure for heavy-duty mobility applications.
The companies will now identify applications in which liquid hydrogen can unlock opportunities in extended travel, such as truck, coach bus, off-road, rail and marine. They anticipate liquid hydrogen road testing to occur over the coming months.
Chart Industries is an independent global manufacturer of engineered equipment servicing the energy and industrial gas markets.
Ballard Power Systems offers fuel cells that enable the adoption of electric vehicles.
Ballard (BLDP) closed up by 2.41 per cent trading at $13.58 per share.
