- Canadian soccer great Christine Sinclair has signed on to be an ambassador for CIBC

Canadian soccer legend Christine Sinclair has signed on to be an ambassador for CIBC (TSX:CM), the bank announced Thursday.
According to a news release, the Canadian bank’s partnership with the Olympic gold medalist and soccer’s all-time leading goal scorer includes “$100,000 to support her legacy of ensuring equity in the sport for future generations.”
“In addition to winning on the field, over the course of a career an athlete’s victory is leaving the game better than they found it,” Sinclair, 40, said in a release. “My ambition is creating an equitable future for the next generation of women in soccer and I am thrilled to have the strong support of Team CIBC.”
The announcement comes as the Canadian Women’s National Team captain is preparing to play in her sixth World Cup. The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 will run from July 20 to Aug. 20 in Australia and New Zealand. Canada begins pool play July 20 against Nigeria in Melbourne, Australia.
“Christine is a champion and trailblazer, and we look forward to helping make her ambitions of creating an equitable game a reality, both today and for the next generation of athletes,” Stephen Forbes, executive vice president, purpose, brand and corporate affairs at CIBC, said in a statement. “This partnership is a proud next step in our bank’s support of this incredible sport and we’re committed to helping remove the barriers women athletes face while expanding opportunities for everyone. CIBC will be cheering loudly for Christine and Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team in the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup.”
Sinclair, who also plays for the Portland Thorns of the National Women’s Soccer League, is a vocal advocate for gender equity in soccer and serves as a role model for young girls who play the sport. She is an official advisor for Project 8, the organization that plans to launch a women’s professional soccer league in Canada in 2025. CIBC is also a Founding Partner of Project 8, which is being led by Sinclair’s former CANWNT teammate and Olympic bronze medalist Diana Matheson.
CIBC’s support of Canadian soccer extends to Canada Soccer and the Canadian Premier League as it entered into a multi-year sponsorship agreement with Canada Soccer and the Canadian Premier League last year.
