Cineplex (TSX:CGX) theatres across the country welcomed nearly 700,000 moviegoers on Sunday to celebrate National Cinema Day.

This represents a 25 per cent increase over last year and marks its busiest summer day of all time.

The second annual National Cinema Day was a joint production between the Movie Theatre Association of Canada (MTAC) and the Cinema Foundation in the United States to celebrate a day at the movies. The one-day event was held at more than 3,000 theatres with more than 30,000 screens.

Some of the most watched summer blockbusters were Barbie, Blue Beetle, Oppenheimer, and opening this past weekend – Gran Turismo, as well as two international titles, Mastaney and Gadar 2.

The theatre chain’s president and CEO, Ellis Jacob, said in a news release this was the second busiest day in Cineplex history behind the “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” premiere in December 2016.

“Experiencing movie magic on the big screen continues to bring people together, and I want to thank our teams for welcoming movie lovers from coast to coast to our theatres,” Jacob said in a statement.

Cineplex is a Canadian brand active in the film entertainment, marketing, media, and amusement sectors. It serves millions of guests every year at its more than 170 movie theatres and location-based entertainment venues.

Cineplex opened trading at C$7.98 per share.
