Aya Gold & Silver Inc. (TSX:AYA) reports that employees and contractors are safe at its Zgounder Silver Mine in Morocco.

The mine is 100 kilometres from Marrakech, the site of Friday night’s magnitude 6.8 earthquake that killed more than 2,400 people and affected 300,000 others.

Aya deployed its medical personnel to communities surrounding the mine and provided as-needed support to the local committees set up to administer emergency disaster relief.

Operations at the mine were suspended for 24 hours to confirm the structural integrity of the mine, mining facilities and infrastructure. Operations have since resumed.

The company stated in a news release that initial inspections have not revealed any infrastructure damage at the mine site.

“We are shocked and saddened by the loss of life caused by the earthquake and send our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and to the people of Morocco,” the company’s president and CEO, Benoit La Salle, said in a statement. “Aya stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of Morocco and continues to offer regional community assistance. Our health and operations teams were immediately mobilized and have been providing targeted support to the Taroudant area under the direction of local authorities since the disaster occurred.”

Aya Gold & Silver Inc. operates the high-grade Zgounder Silver Mine and is exploring its properties along the prospective South-Atlas Fault. The Zgounder Silver Mine is an underground silver mine approximately 260 km east of Agadir in Morocco.

Aya Gold & Silver Inc. opened trading at $7.90 per share.
