Quebecor (TSX:QBR.A) is extending mobile phone coverage across Canada for customers of its Freedom Mobile, Videotron and Fizz brands.

The Montréal-based communications company stated this will promote competition after regulatory rulings and that a phased expansion of the service areas for those brands will take place as it launches its mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) service.

In April, Quebecor’s Videotron bought Freedom Mobile for C$2.85 billion in a move motivated by Rogers’ takeover of Shaw Communications Inc., which agreed last year to sell Freedom to ease competition concerns.

Freedom also announced it would offer its first cellphone plan with national coverage and add 5G capability for customers with plans that cost $45 per month or more in the Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton areas.

The company claims the CRTC’s MVNO framework allows established wireless carriers to offer their services to customers outside their network footprint in areas where they own wireless spectrum.

“The creation of the regulatory framework for MVNO services by the CRTC was a crucial step in strengthening competition in Canada’s wireless sector,”, Quebecor’s president and CEO, Pierre Karl Péladeau, said in a news release. “This framework enables us to step up the roll-out of our wireless products and services beyond the reach of our current network infrastructure starting today and give millions of Canadians access to more choice, better service quality and better prices.”

A recent survey by Tefficient reported that Canadian telecom companies charge the highest rates compared to 44 nations worldwide.

Quebecor is a leader in Canadian telecommunications, entertainment, news media and culture with more than 70 years of history.

Quebecor (TSX:QBR.A) last traded at C$30.65 per share.
