Rogers Sugar (TSX:RSI) has reached a tentative agreement with the Public and Private Workers of Canada (PPWC) Local 8 following a strike initiated by 140 union members back in September.

In a statement, the company said the agreement is subject to ratification and will require a vote from unionized employees.

Unionized workers have been on strike at the Vancouver refinery since Sept. 28, 2023, over wage issues, benefits and Rogers Sugar’s demands to increase operations to 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Prior to Friday’s agreement, PPWC, a firm representing workers from Vancouver’s refinery, had rejected a proposal from December, stating, “Rogers Sugar has repeatedly communicated to the union that continuous operation at the Vancouver refinery is essential to preserve and create jobs, meet growing market demand, and to ensure the future of the plant. The status quo is simply not an option. Unfortunately, the parties have not been able to come to an agreement on the fact that, to survive in the long term, the plant needs to move to continuous operation.”

Although Friday’s announcement will come to a vote next week, Roger Sugar said it will not be making further comments.

Rogers Sugar will hold its Q1 2024 conference call on Feb. 8 and it is anticipated the company will provide additional information at that time.

Rogers Sugar is owned by Lantic Inc. and operates cane sugar refineries in Montreal and Vancouver.
