Bell’s (TSX:BCE) network security enhancements to fight copper theft has already helped put two suspects behind bars.

Besides copper theft, Bell oversaw the installation of aerial alarms to protect critical communications infrastructure from vandalism. The alarms are designed to alert local law enforcement as soon as an incident is detected.

On Feb. 26, an aerial alarm in Fredericton, New Brunswick, notified the local RCMP of a cable cut. They dispatched and arrested two suspects at the time of the incident.

The telecommunications company added that nearly 1,000 physical security incidents have impacted its network since January 2022 of which copper theft is responsible for 87 per cent. New Brunswick is the second most impacted region in the country at 23 per cent of incidents, behind only Ontario who has 55 per cent.

“We’re enhancing the security measures to our network – including the installation of aerial alarms – to better protect our critical infrastructure from vandals and hold them to account,” Bell’s vice president corporate security and responsibility, Marc Duchesne, said in a news release. “We’re pleased that these enhancements are already having an impact and resulting in local arrests, and we thank the law enforcement agencies that have partnered with us in making this a priority area of intervention.”

The company wants Canada’s federal and provincial governments to do more to punish thieves by strengthening laws, increasing fines and making amendments to the Criminal Code.

Bell is a Canadian communications company that provides broadband wireless, internet, TV, media and business communications services.

Shares of Bell (TSX:BCE) last traded at C$48.81.
