Bombardier (TSX:BBD.B) has published an environmental product declaration (EPD) for its Challenger 650, making it the only business jet manufacturer in the world to disclose the environmental impact of all of its in-production aircraft.
The declarations, completed more than a year ahead of company guidance, compile information on aircraft CO2 emissions from raw material extraction until end-of-life. Other aircraft covered under the declarations include the Global 7500, Global 6500, Global 5500 and Challenger 3500.
The data will allow Bombardier to track its aircraft across their life cycles against environmental impact indicators – such as acidification, eutrophication, global warming, photochemical ozone creation, freshwater use and water scarcity potential – and reduce their emissions footprint across the value chain.
Management insights
“The role of EPDs is not to stamp our aircraft as more sustainable than others, but rather to take ownership of the environmental impact they generate,” Jean-Christophe Gallagher, Bombardier’s executive vice president of aircraft sales and defense, said in a statement. “For clients, these reports can be easily consulted like any other spec document. The same way we provide factual information about the unmatched width of the Challenger 650 aircraft’s cabin in its category or its leading dispatch reliability, Bombardier publicly provides factual information on the environmental impact of its business jets. As for the benefits to the industry, EPDs can be accessed as a reference guide to target improvement areas for which we have the expertise or resources to work on in the short- or medium-terms.”
