Canada Goose (TSX:GOOS) has named Franco-Colombian designer Haider Ackermann as its inaugural creative director.

Wednesday’s news release describes Ackermann as “a luminary in the fashion industry and universally celebrated for his talent in defining modern design,” a creative injection the company is sorely in need of, considering that it has saddled shareholders with a more than 75 per cent loss since 2019 driven by a 50 per cent drop in profitability over the period.

The Colombian-born and Paris-based designer, whose first seasonal capsule collection will drop in fall/winter 2024, is tasked with delineating the future of the Canada Goose brand and elevating its iconic aesthetic alongside chairman and chief executive officer Dani Reiss.

Ackermann’s first project as creative director is a limited-edition hoodie in support of Polar Bears International (PBI), which specializes in studying and protecting polar bears and their dwindling habitat. The project was inspired by a trip with Reiss to Churchill, Manitoba, which is known as the polar bear capital of the world, and stands as “a testament to their shared belief that every human has an inherent responsibility to protect our planet and an ability to make a meaningful impact,” the news release goes on to say.

The hoodie’s launch campaign features Oscar-winning actor and environmental activist Jane Fonda, with all proceeds going to PBI to fund Arctic research, conservation and education.

Leadership insights

“What drew me to Canada Goose is not only how they have created a category, but also its authentic reputation and drive to stay committed to its purpose,” Ackermann said in a statement. “The impact this brand has had on the world around us is meaningful and inspirational. I consider myself a student of the environment and my trip to Churchill lit a fire to do more and be more. My hope is that by coming together with the extraordinary climate champion Jane Fonda, we can help drive people to act – and to do it now.”

“When it comes to the marriage of craftsmanship and beauty, there’s no one more fitting than Haider Ackermann. He intuitively understands Canada Goose as a brand apart from all others, and that authenticity, craftsmanship and performance are the cornerstones of our brand,” Reiss said. “With his distinct ability to harness the energy and potential of our authentic heritage, I look forward to seeing his impact across our designs.”

“Collective action is the only way we can go further, faster,” Fonda added. “I have put my full force into inspiring planet-friendly choices to address the climate crisis, and partnering with Haider and Canada Goose to bring attention to what’s happening in the Arctic is powerful, important and essential.”
