BlackBerry (TSX:BB) cybersecurity solutions detected and stopped 3.1 million cyberattacks (37,000 per day) in Q1 2024.

In its latest Global Threat Intelligence Report, the Waterloo, Ontario-based tech firm reported that between January and March of this year, its team found 630,000 malicious hashes, representing a 40 per cent increase from its previous reporting period. Sixty per cent of attacks were directed at critical infrastructure, including government, healthcare, financial and communication industries, of which 40 per cent targeted the financial sector.

Global Threat Intelligence Report highlights

  • 82 per cent of cyberattacks targeted the U.S. and 54 per cent of those attacks contained unique (new) malware
  • BlackBerry observed a 40 per cent per-minute increase in novel hashes (unique malware), compared to the previous reporting period
  • 36 per cent of all threats targeted commercial enterprises, such as retail, manufacturing, automotive and professional services, a 3 per cent increase from the last reporting period
  • “Common vulnerabilities and exposure,” which provide a framework for identifying, standardizing and publicizing known security vulnerabilities and exposures, are becoming rapidly weaponized in all forms of malware – especially ransomware and infostealers

A global problem

BlackBerry also pointed out that these threats will be fuelled by a politically charged year around the world, as disinformation and deepfake campaigns continue to be pervasive across social media. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the continuing conflict in the Middle East and global elections will be the dominant variables in how threat actors select their targets and how they attack those victims.

According to this analysis, BlackBerry’s threat intelligence and research team expects that cybercriminals will persist in meticulously targeting their victims. The emergence of new ransomware and infostealers suggests that private data will remain highly desirable to these digital attackers, with industries such as health care and financial services being prime targets for attacks.

More information is expected to be available at its Global Threat Intelligence Report Deep Dive webinar at 11 am ET Wednesday.

This follows BlackBerry’s recent release of its new and expanded CylanceMDR, a managed detection and response tool backed by the company’s Cylance AI platform, the cybersecurity industry’s longest-running predictive platform on the market.
