FLYHT Aerospace Solutions (TSXV:FLY) announced Thursday that it has collaborated with WestJet and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to improve weather forecasts in North America.

In a news release, FLYHT stated the partnership with WestJet will first focus on providing NOAA with additional humidity, temperature and wind observations in data-sparse locations over the Pacific where WestJet flies routes.

“WestJet is a forward-thinking organization that flies routes over data sparse regions of the Pacific Ocean, making them ideally suited to capture the coverage gaps that exist with the current humidity observations being provided to NOAA. We’re excited to move this initiative with NOAA forward and expand our relationship with WestJet,” Murray Skelton, vice president of business development and weather solutions at FLYHT, said in a statement.

As part of the collaboration, WestJet will install FLYHT’s weather solutions in three Boeing 737 MAX and two Boeing 737-800NG aircraft flying Pacific routes.

The installations will include a package of FLYHT-WVSS-II atmospheric water vapour sensors to continuously monitor environmental conditions around the aircraft during flight.

Hardware installations are expected to begin early next year and are being funded with fiscal year 2023 appropriations of C$500,000 that were awarded to FLYHT in September 2023.

With its headquarters out of Calgary, FLYHT Aerospace Solutions provides airlines with Actionable Intelligence to transform operational insight into immediate, quantifiable action.

Calgary-based WestJet Group is a private company operated by WestJet Airlines Ltd., which is owned by Toronto-based private equity firm Onex Corp.

Shares of FLYHT (TSXV:FLY) were up 18.18 per cent to C$0.13 at Thursday’s close.

Onex Corp. (TSX:ONEX) closed at C$93.92 Thursday, up 2.06 per cent on the day.
