Volt Lithium (TSXV:VLT) has produced battery-grade lithium carbonate from its U.S. field operations in the Permian Basin in West Texas.

“Successfully producing battery-grade lithium carbonate from the Permian is another significant milestone that Volt has achieved this year,” Volt Lithium’s president and CEO, Alex Wylie, said in a news release. “Volt Lithium is on track to become one of North America’s first commercial producers of lithium from oilfield brine, contributing to the security of future sources of critical minerals in North America.”

Innovative DLE technology

Volt has developed a proprietary direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology aimed at commercially extracting lithium from oilfield brines across North America. This initiative supports the goal of securing a critical minerals supply chain for the continent. Since Sept. 17, Volt has been operating its DLE system in the field and continues to optimize its U.S. field unit. This unit enables the company to scale up cost effectively and efficiently to process commercial levels of oilfield brine.

Production and verification

Since the commencement of operations, Volt has been producing lithium chloride concentrate, a precursor to lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxide monohydrate, and lithium metal from oilfield brine in the Permian Basin. The proprietary DLE process has successfully built up an inventory of high-quality eluate, which is being converted into 99.5 per cent pure battery-grade lithium carbonate. Samples of this lithium carbonate have been verified through third-party testing and are being reviewed by potential offtake partners.

Continued production and technological process

Volt will continue to produce lithium chloride concentrate as well as technical-grade and battery-grade lithium carbonate in the field for the rest of 2024. The company’s DLE technology involves a three-stage process:

  1. Brine treatment and purification: Established processes are used to treat and purify oilfield brine, removing up to 99 per cent of organics and contaminants.
  2. Lithium extraction: DLE technology extracts lithium from the brine, achieving up to 99 per cent lithium extraction results to produce eluate (lithium chloride concentrate).
  3. Eluate purification and concentration: The eluate is refined in-house to produce lithium carbonate that meets industry specifications for battery-grade lithium.

About Volt Lithium

Volt’s advancements in lithium extraction technology and production capabilities position the company as a key player in the North American critical minerals supply chain, contributing to the growing demand for battery-grade lithium.

Volt Lithium Corp. is working to become one of North America’s first commercial producers of lithium hydroxide and lithium carbonates extracted from oilfield brine.

Volt Lithium stock (TSXV:VLT) last traded at $0.42 per share and has risen 86.67 per cent since the year began.
