These junior miners have been big winners

These are a few of the best junior gainers on our planet right now:

  • Click to enlargeBrazil’s Colossus Minerals (TSX: T.CSI, Stock Forum) is building its decline at Serra Pelada in Brazil, CEO Ari Sussman tells me today. Mr. Sussman, a Toronto financier, and one of the very good ones, sent photos. (See photo here.) The gold-platinum prospector expects fresh drill data in September. “We have commenced construction for a 2,500-metre decline (ramp) that will serve multi purposes. Firstly, it will allow us to drill off the high grade ore body from underground as surface drilling conditions are challenging (although we are presently drilling with four rigs from surface). Secondly, the ramp will serve as the main ore haulage passage for production. We anticipate phase 1 production to commence in 2012. We should have new drilling results out in early September, which were focused on two new zones we accidentally discovered through geo-tech drilling.” Colossus shares are doing as well as Ari Sussman’s other company, Continental Gold in Colombia.
  • Great Basin Gold’s annual report is wondrous. Please see it. The gold miner (TSX: T.GBG, Stock Forum) and (AMEX: GBG, Stock Forum) says its Burnstone Mine in South Africa has about three percent more of a gold resource than previously reported. GBG shares are on a tear – as in up-tear. CEO Ferdi Dippenaar tells me the reasons are renewed and reinforced expectations for the Nevada and South Africa operations – data that are pushing short-sellers into the plus column. He adds, “I think from Burnstone expectations are becoming a reality in the next month or so, Thom.” I own shares of this Ticker Trax Planetary Prospect.
  • Investor relations pro Michael Baybak in Los Angeles tells me,“The whole junior market, you been in the business as long as I have, it’s going nuts this autumn, really really nuts.” Michael and his partner George Duggan represent a metric tonne of gold-silver-etc. junior prospectors and miners, among them Osisko Mining (TSX: T.OSK, Stock Forum) and tiny Caerus Resources (CA) in Colombia. Osisko’s shares are likely the biggest gainers for any miner/prospector I follow these days. Osisko Mining CEO Sean Roosen just joined the board of Astur Gold in Spain. Astur Gold (TSX: V.AST, Stock Forum) got a nice Roosen stock pop on that board addition this week. But then, Osisko of Quebec’s Malartic Gold Project is probably the best performing gold stock in the world this (northern hemisphere) summer. Please see the news. Mr. Baybak’s investor relations firm also represents NovaGold, International Tower Hill Mines, Uranium Energy Corp. and Great Panther Silver (TSX: T.GPR, Stock Forum), among others. “As it happens, we also act for copper/gold developer Cadillac Ventures Corp., which, like Astur, has gold projects in Spain.”
  • Avanti Mining (TSX: V.AVT, Stock Forum) says the British Columbia Supreme Court ruled in favor of Avanti on the use of a statutory right of way within the town of Kitsault for mine related activities. Please see the news via Stockhouse. I own a lot of the shares of this molybdenum mine developer and Planetary Prospect for subscriber service Ticker Trax.
  • Stockhouse writer Peter Kennedy tells me from his Alaska trip to Fire River Gold (TSX: V.FAU, Stock Forum): “There were 23 (analysts, investment bankers, and writers) on the trip, which surprised me as I had never previously heard of Fire River.”
  • I am scheduled to be in Colombia in two weeks looking at a new property in Antioquia, El Pino Gold Project, tentatively to be acquired by Adrian Hobkirk’s Caerus Resource (TSX: V.CA, Stock Forum). This week sees the start of trading of financier Serafino Iacono’s Gran Colombia Gold (TSX: V.GCM). One of the prospectors on the ground at Segovia, home of the historic, intensely productive yet troubled Frontino Mine, says “everything is proceeding at the site.” That would be Jorge Jaramillo Pereira, who is well connected in the world of Antioquia, Colombia, gold mining. Mr. Iacono, the financier in Bogota, tells me Gran Colombia hopes to produce 100,000 ounces of gold in its first full year, perhaps more. We’ll see. The CEO is Maria Consuelo Araujo. Says Mr. Iacono, “She is brilliant, an ex-minister of foreign affair for (former President) Uribe and one smart business person.”
  • Bellhaven Copper & Gold (TSX: V.BHV, Stock Forum) likely will post drill results from Las Minas gold and copper porphyry in mid-September and possibly sooner. The shares will be extremely actionable in coming days. I own 1.4 million of them. Says ThinkEquity trader and Ticker Trax subscriber Kevin Blair in San Francisco: “Great Basin Gold and Bellhaven Copper & Gold act like a million dollars.” We here at home own both.
  • I intend to see the Sweden gold mine operated by Gold-Ore Resources (TSX: T.GOZ, Stock Forum) Sept. 7 to 9. Patrick Abraham of Panama, a director of Bellhaven, will accompany me. I own 12,000 shares of GOZ. The Gold-Ore mine is scheduled to produce its 1 millionth ounce of gold this month or in September.

NEW ORLEANS & SF: This autumn I will be making two or three appearances outside of prospect tours. One of them is in New Orleans, where I appear each year at Brien Lundin’s New Orleans Investment Conference.

If you’d like to join our Stockhouse and Ticker Trax audience at the late-October show, please register and pay up at this link: REGISTER FOR NEW ORLEANS. You get a discount on the price at that address. It’s my favorite investment show – along with the longstanding San Francisco Hard Assets conference in November, when I will be presenting a workshop.

  • On the conference scene, there are four that interest me … but only two where I am scheduled to present workshops: San Francisco and New Orleans. The ones that intrigue me but that I likely cannot attend because of scheduling conflicts are the Oct. 6-8 Medellin Metals Trade Fair in Colombia and the Doug Casey gathering in Carlsbad, Calif., Oct. 1. Mr. Casey, who is a newsletter writer and financial author, is also hosting an Argentina gathering at Cafayate in late October.
