The Calandra Report: No hand-wringing at New Orleans conference

Still in New Orleans, folks. As David O'Brien, a well-known author in the resources biz (minesnooper.com, etc.) says about this show, "It is a keeper. People willing to spend good money to attend and see who among us is surviving."

He's mostly right. Not much hand-wringing at www.neworleansinvestmentconference.com this week. Just folks -- just wealthy folks, but some newbies, like the 25-year-old investor from Netherlands who now lives in ALABAMA with her medical doctor husband -- looking for fresh investments.

Notable exhibitors and presenters in my notebook, thus far, include:
  • Eurasian Mining (Russia opportunity now in the bag); Brent Cook, whom I named Dr. No because he is not afraid to say No on projects and has the track record to prove it -- here with his stunning daughter, who recently graduated UC-Santa Cruz;
  • Natcore Technology (TSX:V.NXT, Stock Forum)(I met with the scientists this time and will have more later);
  • Frank Holmes telling folks at his box lunch thing to stick out this 3-year dumpster market - he does not like the clanging plates during lunch, thus the box factor;
  • Brien Lundin (it is his show, after all) cautioning folks, about 600 of 'em, to prepare for early next year to see metals equities and commodities resume their rise;
  • others, such as Mary Anne Aden, disagreeing politely, Southern style, and remaining tres go-go on metals through year-end 2013 and into 2014;
  • Laura Stein entertaining at restaurant August in the warehouse and arts district and discussing our NuLegacy Gold (TSX:V.NUG, Stock Forum) and our Gold Standard Ventures (TSX:V.GSV, Stock Forum);
  • Rick Rule talking up platinum for his Sprott platinum trust.

More to come. Looking at an alt.energy com called Forcefield Energy (NASDAQ:FNRG, Stock Forum), which just entered Nasdaq; swooped into Cayden Resources (TSX:V.CYD, Stock Forum), which looks on track in Mexico; looked at Prophecy Platinum (TSX:V.NKL, Stock Forum); just bought more Natcore this morning, more Gold Standard Ventures on Monday and more Paramount Gold (TSX:T.PZG, Stock Forum) on Friday.

Best line I heard comes from Brien Lundin. I asked him if he saw the president give his speech at the Port of New Orleans on Friday. "I didn't, but I did catch the motorcade go by and waved, just not with all my fingers in the breeze is all."

Later. Nursing badly bruised ribs from a fall into the side of our fishing boat this past weekend; it only hurts when you breathe, just like the resources market. That is changing.
