The markets were shaken by PMI numbers releases last week. And it was worth paying attention to our last week’s News Calendar, as we pointed them out early in the week. This week, we will have some potentially moving news releases too. So let’s take a look at those events.

p1.jpg

The week behind
The biggest market-moving event has been Tuesday’s worse-than-expected ISM Manufacturing PMI release. And we pointed it out in our last week’s news calendar release. It sent the price of gold much higher, stocks sold off and the greenback went lower against the major currencies. Thursday’s ISM Non-Manufacturing PMI has also been worse than expected, but the markets found their short-term bottom at the moment of its release. Then Friday’s monthly jobs data lifted the sentiment at the end of the week, sending stocks higher. However, gold and the greenback went sideways following their news-driven Tuesday-Thursday moves. Tuesday’s RBA’s interest rate cut decision is also worth mentioning, as it sent the Australian dollar lower that day.

The week ahead
What about the coming week? Investors will wait for the Fed talk on Monday, Tuesday and on Wednesday, along with Wednesday’s FOMC Meeting Minutes release. It may be an important week for the oil prices, as OPEC meets on Friday. Thursday will be important for the British currency, as we will get the GDP, Manufacturing Production data and a speech from the BOE Governor Carney. Last but not least, the data releases from Australia, Canada, China and Japan will be watched this week.

  • Fed Chairman Powell will speak on Monday, Tuesday, and again on Wednesday. It may affect stocks, gold, oil and currencies. In addition we will get the FOMC Meeting Minutes on Wednesday. Tuesday’s PPI and Thursday’s CPI numbers releases are also worth mentioning.
  • The coming week will be quite important for the oil. On Tuesday we will get the weekly API stock number followed by Wednesday’s Crude Oil Inventories. But all eyes will be on Friday’s OPEC Meeting.
  • Thursday will be an important day for the British currency, as the U.K.’s GDP, Manufacturing Production data will be released. There will also be a speech from the BOE Governor Carney.
  • The data releases from Australia, Canada and Japan will likely affect their currencies rates this week and Monday’s China Caixin Services PMI number is worth mentioning too.

You will find this week’s the key news releases below (EST time zone). For your convenience, we broken them down per market to which they are particularly important, so that you know what to pay extra attention to, if you have or plan to have positions in one of them. Moreover, we put the particularly important news in bold. This kind of news is what is more likely to trigger volatile movements. The news that are not in bold usually don’t result in bigger intraday moves, so unless one is engaging in a particularly active form of day trading, it might be best to focus on the news that we put in bold. Of course, you are free to use the below indications as you see fit. As far as we are concerned, we are usually not engaging in any day trading during days with “bold” events on a given market. However, in case of more medium-term trades, we usually choose to be aware of the increased intraday volatility, but not change the currently opened position.
