Nickel . Hummm

Nickel is one of the hottest commodities in the resource space as the popularity and demand for electric vehicles (EVS) surge. Along with lithium and cobalt, nickel is a critical material in lithium-ion battery cells and will play a key role in the energy transition.

The Charge” is a new podcast series that does a deep dive into all things nickel. Why is it so important in batteries? Where and how is it mined? If you drive an electric vehicle, are you really saving the planet? What the @#%& happened to nickel trading on the LME? How is battery tech evolving? Is there money to be made?

The Charge has lined up a world class group of experts to answer all these questions and more.

In episode one, “Nickel: The key to electrification” you will hear from battery expert Ken Rudisuela of the Nickel Institute about why nickel has the potential to power the electric revolution.

Episode two gets into the important topic of sustainability and listeners will learn how nickel mining can be done properly, relative to our net-zero goals. “Nickel Mining: Searching for Sustainability” features interview with Lyle Trytten and Greg Dipple, two experts in the field of sustainable mining.

Episode 3 & 4 feature battery metals advisor Robert Morris, who explains why the rise of EVs represents a once in a hundred years kind of phenomenon. Investors take note – episode 3 “Investing in Nickel: Betting on the EV Boom” was recorded just days before nickel prices spiked and the LME shut down, and the subsequent episode “Nickel prices: What the $@#! Just happened ?!?” was recorded right after these unprecedented events.

The episode “EVs: Bring on the revolution” looks at the excitement and activity in the EV space and features Philippe Couillard of Britishvolt Canada. The EV market is set to quadruple to nearly US$1 trillion by 2030 and more than 50% of new cars sold will be electric in that time frame.

Episode 7 features an interview with Dan Blondal of Nano One and “Innovation: The future of batteries” looks at what’s driving battery innovation and what does future technology mean for nickel and other critical metals?

Finally, the last episode in the series is an insightful interview with Mark Jarvis, CEO of Giga Metals, a Canadian-based mineral exploration company. In “The Charge is on: the rush to secure nickel supply”, Mark explains why the EV revolution is dead in its tracks if we don’t mine more nickel, lithium and copper.

A lot of good info. But Electric Vehicles won't have 50% of the market by 2030 unless the infrastructure is in place for recharging them quicker and cheaper. No one has addressed that issue and that is critical to the EV market imo. Right now there are horror stories from EV owners and the problems of long distance commutes. But even so the future for nickel is bright and that includes ...more
