Treasury Regulation Section 1.611-1(d)(2) provides guidance in determining the fair market value of oil and gas properties. It similarly provides that “the fair market value of an [oil and gas] property is the amount which would induce a willing seller to sell and a willing buyer to purchase.” That sounds a lot to me like what you are saying!

P.S.- Way back in the 1970's and 1980's I was a stockbroker too for with a major Wall Street investment banking firm and then started my own firm as a RIA. I retired in my mid-40's and continue to self-manage my portfolio and those of members of my immediate family.
