I spoke with Berk from IT yesterday and he said that they will do whatever they can not to eliminate the dividend since most of their institutional investors are dividend paying mutual funds... and can only hold commons which pay dividends.

My guess is that those portfolio managers know that dividend elimination is inevitable at this point - so they are liquidating their positions at any price prior to that... because their funds' mandate does not allow to hold non-dividend paying stocks.  This is my only explanation for such carnage vs peers.
