Maybe this is a dumb question, does HVU and HVI balance out each other daily?
reading the history it looks like it is, but the recent tumble seems they are not exactly 
related to each other. How do I understand this?

For one thing, HVU is 2x leveraged. HVI is not leveraged. HUV is the unleveraged inverse of HVI, however there are other factors in play.
