James Pettit's Bayfield Ventures Corp. (BYV) edged up three cents to 31.5 cents on a busier-than-usual 902,000 shares and its "best interval to date," 26.5 metres of 8.8 grams per tonne gold, from the Burns Block property in Ontario. Bayfield is trying to prove that Burns Block is similar to Rainy River Resources Ltd.'s (RR: $5.26) eight-million-ounce eponymous gold deposit next door. The bigger neighbour once tried its hand at Burns Block, optioning it from Bayfield in 2007, but six unexciting drill holes later, Rainy dropped the option. Bayfield started receiving some pleasing Burns assays in 2010, which boosted the stock to its all-time high of $1.58, up from nine cents in 2009. It jumped again in June, 2011, to $1.02 from 54 cents, on another long, pleasing intersection. That one, however, also caught the attention of the British Columbia Securities Commission, which forced Bayfield to restate its assays and accused the company of smearing high-grade intercepts over longer, lower-grade intervals. The stock dropped back to 66 cents, and has yet to recover, despite a year of drilling and plenty of Rainy River updates (11 just this month). Mr. Pettit has help promoting the stock from Bayfield's young IR man-about-town, Jordan Trimble.

Mr. Trimble, the son of Bill Trimble, does IR work through Bill's 98 Corporate Group. Besides working Vancouver's popular bars and restaurants, young Mr. Trimble is a member of the prestigious Vancouver Club, which, for men under 35, costs $3,450 (including deposit) plus $104 a month. Older members have to pay a heavier $6,940 (including deposit) plus $208 a month. Mr. Trimble Sr. became well known for his work trying to turn around struggling companies in the 1980s. Much effort went into International Cruiseshipcentres Corp. and Apex Resorts, both of which had unhappy endings despite Mr. Trimble's considerable efforts.
