The federal government is lukewarm on Ontario’s Ring of Fire. The Conservative government stopped well short of meeting the Ontario government’s request for $1 billion to develop the chromite-rich deposit in northwestern Ontario. While the budget recognized the importance of chromite in the manufacture of steel and other alloys, it only set aside $23 million over five years to stimulate the technology necessary to separate and develop chromite and other rare earth elements.
The Kathleen Wynne government has committed $1 billion for the Ring of Fire, contingent on matching federal funds.
