DIAGEO PLC in talks with Canada cannabis firms

Beverage makers have been getting into Canadian cannabis in a big way...  The market has been underestimating the potential size of the beverage industry but it is becoming apparent how interested these large alcohol companies are to not miss out and secure a supply...

Diageo Plc. is in talks with at least three Canadian cannabis firms, according to a report from BNN Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the matter who declined to speak on-the-record.

The U.K.-based maker of Guinness beer and Crown Royal Canadian whisky is said to be discussing a potential investment or collaboration with the goal of creating cannabis-infused beverages, according to the sources.

Diageo’s (DEO.N) reported interest in the Canadian cannabis sector comes on the heels of Constellation Brands Inc. (STZ.N) upping its stake in Canopy Growth Corp. (WEED.TO) with a $5 billion investment earlier this month, and the announcement of a drinks-based joint venture involving Molson Coors Brewing Co. (TAP.N) and Hydropothecary Corp. (HEXO.TO).

The stage of the reported talked remains unclear. BNN Bloomberg references comments from a cannabis executive who suggested a deal may be close after meeting with the London-based drinks maker.

A Diageo spokesperson declined to confirm the talks, telling Yahoo Canada Finance, “We never comment on speculation. As we’ve said before, we are monitoring this space closely.”

@rborhi: What's your guess on who they are talking to?

Market seems to think it's Aphria. Would be hilarious if it were SNN, though

It would be great, of course, if it were SNN. Honestly, it's sad to see all the other companies marching on and SNN left behind. Canopy reached all time highs today. Others are also doing well.

agreed. snn was a late stage player and is not solely CAD LP so that is definitely holding the mkt cap down imo... the summer doldrums finally coming to an end. looking forward to some clarifying news about the spinout plan and progress update on both facility buildouts. No doubt snn is severely undervalued compared to its CAD peers, so either those stocks deflate considerably or once the spinout ...more

Been holding SNN for a little while now and just averaged down today.   SNN is Canopy’s gateway to the U.S with their GMP facility in California.  Why would Canopy need 90,000 kg over the next two years from any other LP when they already have enough production for rec?  Canopy made the deal so that when the legal U.S. cannabis market opens they can move in through a reputable ...more

Well, you're actually wrong about the agreement. First of all, up to 45k means that Canopy must buy everything Sunniva is able to produce according to specs, up to 45k. Secondly, it is not peculiar at all that the building isn't constructed yet - the agreement is only in effect starting from January 2019, in any case. If the first harvest is ready several months later, that only means ...more
