R&D investment is directly correlated with growth.  Companies that invest in develpoing new technologies ALWAYS grow and most of the time gain a competative advantage.
In UAV's case, the money spent on R&D will help them get established as leaders in the industry.
Additionally, there is a thing called SRED tax credit + Refund. Look it up if youre a serious investor.
The SRED tax credit/Refund can save small companies LOTS of money - up to 40% on amounts up to $3,000,000. I know for a fact that UAV is taking advantage of this. 
So Mr. Bayoubucks, I hope you dont get too disapointed becasue the investment in R&D isn't so costly as you think and will hopefuly help grow the company.
