Common sense is an ethno-centric perception. If common sense is what is best for humanity then air, water and food are far more important than coal and money. Responsible mining? Taxpayers are tired of tax breaks to the mining companies and the additional costs created by damage to the environment. We all know that the mining regulations are a farce since they are never monitored or enforced.
Coal mining will not and cannot replace the industry and jobs that are sustainable. In fact, it was the BC govt. who insisted that our Regional District devise a sustainable plan for economic growth. There is nothing sustainable about a 16 year plan that threatens our drinking water, tourism, real estate and existing infrastructure. Boom and bust economies are not sustainable and it is not my responsibility to provide jobs for those who will do your dirty work. Its past time for investment in alternate energy. We know how to do it and if China wants to energize their nation, they can do it in a clean and responsible way. They do not need coal.
