promise of jobs is industry carrot
promise of jobs is industry carrot do your math, Orzee. Claims of jobs need to be matched against facts re inflated and unstable job numbers (Quinsam mine owners promised around 300 jobs that have stabilized at around 140) and Campbell River is still waiting for the economic prosperity promised in bids for social licence. Mines squeeze out sustainable jobs and lead generally to population decline (Princeton) that leads to greater unemployment.
Talk to Premier Christy Clark who supported hiring Chinese workers for HD mines rather than sink adequate dollars into credible training programs. Talk to the thousands who have lost their mining jobs and those in their communities that lost service jobs, and mining companies declaring bankruptcy to avoid paying decent benefits. If you didn't appear to be a CEC principal, I would advise you to broaden your research such as two analyses of job and economic claims inflation on coalwatch.ca and the recently published Harvard study that estimates the hidden costs of coal passed onto taxpayers and the environment are 350 - 500 billion or the billions to cleanup former coal ports along the US westcoast that went bust during coal's bust period. The BC Auditor General concluded that nonregulated mines cost taxpayers more than they benefit communities so promises of a few jobs at $25.00 an hour for unskilled workers that risk a life limiting and threatening lung disease from inadequate mitigation of coal dust and diesel fuel is simply an industry carrot to get the permit.
Definition of the big lie: tell it often enough and even the liar becomes a believer.
