Price of Coal is Down, 36 Miners Permanently Lose Their Jobs

Hillsborough Resources, owner of the Quinsam coal mine in the Campbell River area has recently permanently laid off 36 miners due to the dropping price of thermal coal.  While Compliance likes to say that their coal is metalurgic coal, sources say it is actually thermal coal and coking coal which would have to be blended to make steel.

It therefore sells at a 40 ...more

Hey Coyote did you also see in the local news that pretty soon (like starting next year) 100s of Baynes Sound area shellfish workers will also have to be laid off permanently? In the last few years some sort of unknown water quality issues have gotten ever worse with the net result being that there now is massive mortality of cultivated oyster and scallop operations, to the point that commercial ...more

"Unknown" water quality issues? Hah. Nice try.  The cause, if you care to use the Google at all, is very well known and has been affecting shellfish operations in the Pacific Northwest for the past 5 years.  The culprit is increased ocean acidity which is a direct result of higher CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere being sucked up by the worlds oceans.   So ya ...more
