Same as for what news should be coming out. Des, I know you are an amateur here, as I am not an expert myself, but I can at least handle some fluctuation. This over time will come to you as I personally have never seen a perfectly rising stock. Every stock is going to fluctuate to some degree. If this is not for you, stress will be too great. Maybe gic's or gov't bonds will make you feel more comfortable. Playing stocks is gambling. The more you know though, the better you can get at picking companies. Every successful trader/ investor has had some losers. A fact of investing.
