RE: RE: RE: Negotiations Deadlock?
RE: RE: RE: Negotiations Deadlock? This will get much worse before it gets better. Government policy is being influenced by a couple of factors beyond it's base ideology. First, the anti-mining opposition is finally getting organised and appears to be gathering momentum just as negotiations are entering the final stages. Therefore, political pressure is high and the mining companies must be seen to squeal or the outcome of will likely be viewed as a loss on Ecuador's side. Second, Ecuador's negotiating tactics with foreign companies and outside sovereigns has taken a turn in the last decade. Their new modus operandi is to push for more until the counter party walks away. They did this with big oil and they did this with the Chinese on the recent $2 billion hydro power financing. So sometime later this year I am fully expecting a news release stating that negotiations have broken down because mining companies are being too greedy - or something to that effect. A few months later they will start again, and only then will we be close to a deal.
