"Business is Good" - John Gamble
...

In Welland near Niagara Falls, Enerdynamic Hybrid Technologies also produces solar panels just for the U.S. market, says John Gamble, the main executive. “Business is good,” he states. Another company, Unconquered Sun of Tecumseth, has become a subsidiary of Bluewater Power Co., and makes, among other things, solar-powered golf carts.

These manufacturers warn, though, that unless Canada creates new incentives for that solar industry, they may move their operations to the U.S., nearer to the experience. Some also see future opportunities in Alberta, where NDP Premier Rachel Notley’s government in its Climate Leadership Plan in November vowed to phase out coal and obtain 30 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

Gamble is hopeful that Justin Trudeau’s federal Liberals, with their Paris commitments to fight global warming, will offer regulations or any other incentives to inspire solar installations in Canada.

“The Trudeau government is going to be very good for all of us,” he states.

Tom Timmins, chair from the renewable energy group at Gowlings in Toronto, predicts a good chance for solar energy companies, noting that big investors for example Manulife, Sun Life and Metlife are purchasing solar projects. He expects federal policy to help.

“The Liberal government campaigned on responding to climate change, and solar is a large part from the solution,” he said. “The pronouncements produced by the Canadian government would lean towards solar.

“I’m seeing Ontario companies going international and that’s pretty neat,” he adds. “That’s not necessarily a bad story.”
