Globe says Rogers aims to bring 4K TV into mainstream

2015-10-06 08:59 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition Rogers Communications is taking advantage of its sports ownership to try to drive 4K television technology into the mainstream. The Globe's James Bradshaw and Chrstine Dobby write Rogers announced Monday it will apply the next generation of superhigh-definition TV technology to 101 live sports broadcasts starting in 2016 and has added a new partnership with Netflix. Rogers is offering this cutting-edge clarity starting with a Jan. 23 NHL broadcast and it plans to include all 2016 Blue Jays home games. Viewers will need to buy a 4K television set and a set-top box capable of receiving the new signals. To date, 4K technology has not been widely adopted, but Rogers is using its clout in cable TV, Internet and media to move ahead of its competitors.
