Interesting comment on Page 108:
Marking The marking of fuel is not new, but the technology
for doing so has advanced considerably in recent
years. Dyes have been used in Europe for decades
to identify fuels with differing tax rates, but criminals
have established extensive operations to launder the
fuel, removing both the dye and the effectiveness of
that marking approach. More advanced molecular
markers, which cannot be removed, however, have
become a useful and effective countermeasure to
fight against both theft and, importantly, adulteration.
As the technology continues to advance, it would be helpful to be able to layer the markers such that different combinations of markers could provide a more complete narrative as to the supply chain of the fuel.
