TIMMINS - A Timmins man has been arrested in connection with an incident on Sunday involving explosives at the Lake Shore Gold Bell Creek Mine on Florence Avenue in Porcupine.

The incident resulted in the mine being evacuated.

Timmins Police Service arrested a 20-year-old Timmins man after, according to Ontario Ministry of Labour officials, underground employees discovered an unusual situation involving a large quantity of mining explosives.

According to documents filed with the provincial court office in Timmins, Alexandre Legault is charged under section 81 (1)(c) of the Criminal Code with using explosives with intent to destroy or damage property without lawful excuse.

The suspect was taken into police custody and held until there was a bail hearing on Tuesday.

At that time, bail was granted to the suspect and a ban on publication was ordered under section 517 of the Criminal Code. That prevents the media from reporting any evidence that was discussed in court.

Timmins Police Service did not reveal any information with respect to the charges, the arrest or even the suspect’s appearance in court until contacted by The Daily Press on Thursday.

Timmins Police would only confirm that a man was arrested and had a court appearance.

At the time of the incident on Sunday, the Ontario Ministry of Labour (MOL) attended the scene. As a safety precaution the mine was evacuated and steps were taken to ensure there was no further danger to employees. The MOL said there were no reports of injuries and no orders were issued by the ministry as a result of the incident.

Legault has a court appearance in Timmins scheduled next week.
