TORONTO — Ford is claiming top spot in Canadian auto sales for the second month in a row as the number of vehicles its sold in July rose by 47.4 per cent above the same month last year.
The company says it sold 26,788 in July. The number of trucks sold by Ford (NYSE:F) was up 59.9 per cent to 21,668 while car sales rose by 10.9 per cent to 5,120.
Ford is the only North American automaker that didn't require government assistance and a trip to bankruptcy court this year and it has benefited from the uncertainty and temporary shutdowns at General Motors and Chrysler.
Meanwhile, Honda Canada Inc. reported July sales of 12,984 units by its combined Honda and luxury brand Acura divisions, down 19 per cent from last year.
Toyota Canada Inc. reported sales of 19,232 vehicles in its Toyota and Lexus brands, down 12.5 per cent from July 2008.
Other vehicle makers are expected to release their July sales numbers later Tuesday but Ford is already claiming it outsold General Motors, the usual market leader in terms of sales volumes.
Nissan Canada Inc. said its sales of Nissan and the luxury Infiniti brands combined fell 3.1 per cent in July to 7,534. Nissan accounted for 6,832 units sold, while Infiniti accounted for 702.
Kia Canada reported a 29.6 per cent increase to 5,110 vehicles sold, the third consecutive month in which South Korea's No. 2 automaker has moved more than 5,000 vehicles.
Audi Canada claimed its best July sales ever, up 40 per cent year-over-year to 822 units.
