Heaping up Nevada

  • Read Our Speed: CMJ, RVM, CFO

Monday, March 15, 2010

By Thom Calandra -- TickerTrax.com

RENOWe are here, not far from their Nevada home, with Bob and Gloria Carrington of Colombian Mines Corp. (TSX: V.CMJ, Stock Forum), a Planetary Prospect of this service.

I can report, as we take two hours to discuss a Nevada prospect linked to CMJ President Bob Carrington, that aside from the two drills working his Yarumalito property in Colombia, and the recent $3 million or so financing, there is no news to explain why CMJ is now approaching $1.40 Canadian a share.

“Just the land package (300,000 hectares), maybe the fact that a new company (SunwardTSX: V.SWD, Stock Forum), just came public and is worth 7 times what we are,” says Bob. (Sunward is the newly public company that holds Titiribi, Murindo and other Georges Juilland-engineeered properties in Colombia)

At the top of Mr. Carrington’s list right now is seeing drill results just coming in from Yarumalito, a concession three hours from the city of Medellin in the Marmato mineral district. Yarumalito is an intermediate sulfidation- type gold-copper porphyry.

Also on Mr. Carrington’s and CEO Nate Tewalt’s to-do list: revisit Benicia, another property some 90 minutes from the city of Medellin – perhaps with Ticker Trax in tow. And review copper crush samples coming from poly-metallic prospect El Dovio. Cerro de Cobre is another copper property in the Colombia portfolio of this emerging prospector.

Bob is here telling me not about Colombia but about a long held property in Nevada, one that is surrounded by Newmont Mining operations and has all but given up the ghost of heap leaches past. I will have more to say about General Metals Corp. (OTC:BB: GNMT, Stock Forum) in a future issue. Needless to say, we here are searching for anything that can show us three things: dirt-cheap stock, serious managers, and a working project within one year of producing gold (silver, copper accepted gladly) for all-in costs of $700 an ounce or less.

We’ll see.

Up ahead this week: Why Harry Miller is convinced his Clifton StarResources (TSX: V.CFO, Stock Forum), already one of the Canadian stock market’s strongest percentage gainers this winter, is worth at least $1 a share to the price of nearby and joint-venture partner Osisko Mining (TSX: T.OSK, Stock Forum) shares. I’ll do the math on that one.

Also up ahead: Wednesday court hearing that will clarify the timing and destiny of Revett Minerals’ (TSX: T.RVM, Stock Forum) Rock Creek silver project in Montana.

The Dirty Dozen

  • Premium Exploration (TSX: V.PEM, Stock Forum) – Gold in Idaho and Montana. Extremely high grades. Wilf Struck is the geologist and CEO.
  • Inter-Citic Minerals (TSX: T.ICI, Stock Forum) – Gold prospector and mine developer in eastern China. Big stock move ahead as China gold companies and banks seek to boost their gold output from within their own country.
  • Central Fund of Canada (AMEX: CEF, Stock Forum) and (TSX: T.CEF.A, Stock Forum) – Gold and silver repository. Its premiums, being a closed end fund, are rising.
  • BioCryst Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: BCRX, Stock Forum) – Influenza and leukemia drugs. It is in play. As in: Seen as an innovative drug developer by large pharmaceutical company. Shares are active. Biomedical appears to be back this month as an investment.
  • Endeavour Silver (AMEX: EXK, Stock Forum) and (TSX: T.EDR, Stock Forum) Silver in Mexico. On a property purchase tear. Brad Cooke is the CEO and is clever and trustworthy. Several organizations this week see silver as outpacing gains in most metals for the next several years.
  • Xtra-Gold Resources (OTO: XTGR, Stock Forum) – This is the West Africa gold prospector that likely will follow in the footsteps of successful Keegan Resources (TSX: T.KGN, Stock Forum).
  • Great Basin Gold (TSX: T.GBG, Stock Forum): This is Ferdi Dippenaar’sSouth Africa and Nevada company. Please see archives for coverage of Burnstone and Hollister mines. After our visit to South Africa in February, I can say that several companies are circling GBG, looking for ownership of the estimated 400,000 yearly ounces of gold Great Basin will be producing from Nevada and South Africa.
  • Candente Copper (TSX: DNT, Stock Forum) – Joanne Freeze’s Candente has copper in Peru. A second unit is now a separate company, Candente Gold (TSX: T.CDG, Stock Forum) in Mexico and Peru. We list it because we need copper in our portfolio. Probably the cheapest thing on this list, along with Avanti Mining. Joey tells me, “The institutions are starting to get it.” Please see our Stockhouse article for what that means.
  • Great Panther Silver (TSX: T.GPR, Stock Forum) – Silver in Mexico. Robert Archer is the CEO. Like Brad Cooke, he is trustworthy. Like Endeavour Silver, the Panther is on the prowl for assets. GPR’s rising silver grades and low stock valuation compared with other Mexico silver producers make the company a value here.
  • Avanti Mining (TSX: V.AVT, Stock Forum) - Cheap and aspiring molybdenum mine at Kitsault in British Columbia. Under pressure after a capital raise. Moly futures are trading now in London. BMO, the bank, helped Avanti’s Craig Nelsen and AJ Ali raise $17 million Canadian.
  • Colombian Mines Corp. (TSX: V.CMJ, Stock Forum) –CMJ has one of the widest property companies in Colombia for such a tiny company – some 300,000 hectares. Stockhouse’s Sean Mason has an article on the company. We are looking at several tiny pharma and drug discovery companies.
  • Ticker Trax and Stockhouse are looking for editing and writing talents who can base themselves in Toronto or Vancouver. Must be a university graduate with writing and editing savvy. It also helps to understand natural resources. Ping me please on the email – thom dot calandra at stockhouse dot com.
  • I hope to visit Antares Minerals’ (TSX: V.ANM, Stock Forum) Haquira copper project sometime soon. I shall be back in Colombia around April 5. I also look to update what we know about tiny Bellhaven Copper & Gold (TSX: V.BHV, Stock Forum), whose 15-cent shares I intend to purchase by the end of this month.
