There is another photo that was made available back in the day. It showed a solitary dump truck offloading a pile of dirt.  How appropriate, in retrospect. A true excavation project, of this magnitude, would involve numerous pieces of heavy equipment grading, levelling etc.  They would be 'removing'  dirt, clay, detritus before the pile drivers arrived on site.  Betcha
