 Yes watch22, you are absolutely correct under the circumstances that you have alluded to. But throw into the mix the idea that the capital gain or dividend was say inside an RRSP and you now decide to withdrawn it. Now, what would the effective tax rate be?

 It is next to impossible to put an effective tax rate on any investment income without first knowing the person's overall income or tax situation, not just from the year in question, but also sometimes the previous years also...
