My guess re adjuvant

My guess is that there is an adjuvant with Medicago's vaccine. I think it's useless to have a pandemic vaccine without using an adjuvant since without it you need extremely high doses of vaccine and 2 doses before you can get a protective response. That defeats the whole concept of a large and rapid worldwide innoculation when you have a pandemic outbreak.

A bit of a background on why you would need 2 doses. When the body is naive (ie. never saw a flu strain before or never had a flu shot with that strain) then there is NOT enough response with 1 dose. That is why infants get 2 shots of seasonal flu shots 1 month apart when they first get them. You almost have to prime the body. With a pandemic with a novel flu strain we can all be considered naive infants to put it bluntly.

With Medicago's vaccine they have proven you can get 100% protection at extremely low doses of vaccine and with 1 shot. That means immediate protection when time is vital and also means enough vaccine to go around the world.

Remember adjuvants have been used for 14yrs in Europe with excellent safety profile. All of us will be getting GSK's adjuvanted vaccine this fall. SVA out of China have proven 1 dose protection with their adjuvanted vaccine. Same with Novartis's cell based vaccine that is also adjuvanted.

Novavax needs much higher doses and likely 2 doses if I'm not mistaken.
