What it means is that they tested their VLP (Virus Like Particles/vaccine) in animal models (usually ferrets or mice, this case mice) and they're results show positive results in terms of immune response. Testing in animal models are called preclinical trials. So May 8th, they released that they had the VLP produced and then today results show a positive immune response to the VLP vaccine from the animal testing for H7N9. Next step would be clinical stage 1 followed by stage 2 and 3 for commercialisation. Stage 2 tested vaccines can be used foe an emergency response situation.

News release fom May 8th is about VLP production success and today about preclinical success.
