No cold chain, no immunization
The lack of reliable cold chains in low-income countries is a long-standing challenge to universal vaccine access. Improperly maintained or outdated refrigeration equipment, poor compliance with cold-chain procedures, inadequate monitoring and poor understanding of the dangers of vaccine freezing contribute to the weakness of the existing cold chain. The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization estimates that only 10% of health care facilities in the world’s poorest countries have a reliable electricity supply.
The World Health organization estimates that more than 50% of vaccines may be wasted globally every year because of temperature control, logistics and shipment-related issues.
One in five children in the world aren’t fully protected by even the most basic vaccines; almost 20 million are at risk of contracting preventable diseases because they are under-vaccinated. As a result, about 1.5 million children die every year from diseases that can be prevented by vaccination coverage.
We can do better, and we must. Mountain Valley MD Is focused on drug delivery systems that would ultimately eliminate the need for cold chain logistics in the transportation of vaccines and medicines.
