On February 24, 2022, the Cayenne Court of Appeal upheld the judgment of first instance condemning the gold panning company Gold'or for pollution by suspended solids in the Kokioko creek. The company is still sentenced to a suspended fine of 100,000 euros as well as the payment of 10,000 euros in damages for the various civil parties, the Office National des Forts, France Nature Environnement and Guyane Nature Environnement. Back to the case…

The confirmation of this condemnation is all the most important as it highlights the negligence vis--vis the protection of the environment that the managers of this company, the Ostorero family, may show. Indeed, one of the people managing the company Gold'or is none other than the president of the Federation of Mining Operators of French Guiana… The Ostorero family is also at the origin of many mining projects, such as the Esprance project with one of their other mining companies: this last project is similar to a Montagne d'or bis project and requires extreme vigilance vis--vis industrial and environmental risks.

“ The confirmation of this judgment on appeal is a strong signal, which calls for the greatest caution with regard to compliance with environmental standards in the mining sector. In the future, faced with such negligence, we strongly doubt the ability of these managers to operate an industrial mine without risk. " says Garance LECOCQ, coordinator of Guyane Nature Environnement.
